FOOD NUTRITION IRELAND
In a recent Winter Nutrition article we discussed some cooking methods which involved the use of a Hay Box to prepare the food. For those of you who dont know what a Hay Box is below you will find out how to easily make one for yourself.
Hay Box Construction
You can build a wooden box, which you line with silver foil, cushions and blankets or a bed quilt. Or you can do without a specially made box:
I myself have emptied one of the shelves in my lower kitchen cupboards and I wrap my pot in two small fleece blankets and one large blanket on the outside, together with a tablemat and tea towel. This works as follows: you fold the blankets length-wise and place them cross-wise on top of each other on the table, the large blanket on the outside. Place a tablemat in the middle of the top blanket. Drape a tea towel over the pot while it is still on the stove (but having turned the flame off). Place the pot on the tablemat. Fold the innermost fleece blanket around the pot and tuck it in around the pot. Do the same with the second and third blankets. Secure snugly and place on the shelf in your cupboard. Leave it sit there till dinner time
Wash your towels about twice a year. Replace the tea towel regularly.
If you are handy on the sewing machine, you could transform part of a bed quilt into a sort of teapot cosy.
