It is something I am suprised how many students remain uncertain of.
What is Reiki?
What is it that you are doing when you give yourself a treatment?
What is it that you are channelling?
It is important to question things deeply and to have alot of doubt early on with your spiritual path.. but it is also important to clearly resolve things conceptually.. to have “ah-ha” moments about important concepts.
REIKI and CULTURAL conditioning..
Most people, in the west, come to reiki with a judeo christian history and framework into which they desperately (and sometimes very successfully) want to fit reiki. This is a little problematic from the start, considering reiki is an eastern phenomena, originating from Japan, with all the paradoxes and contradictions, that are so beautifully and poetically communicated in Japanese culture.. where for us in the West.. to successfully understand what is the healing energy, we are going to have to reduce our reliance on dualism and our instiable need to place everything into one of four categories: is, is not, both or neither.

If you are going to touch the truth of your practise.
Something else I should probably confess early on here, is that here at the Reiki Blog we also see the practise of reiki as taught by Usui and as carried on today by practioners in the many lineages that have sprouted from his teachings.. is very much a spiritual practise.. something that will bring you closer to the path that leads to an understanding and direct experience of the true nature of life..
But anyway.. back to this academic discussion! hehe.. it is important, though.. just a little dry perhaps.. great essay to kick of the blog!..What is the rei-ki?
Most people translate it as Universal Energy, the energy of unconditional love. And that is beautiful.. not very accurate.. but beautiful.
Ki I am sure most already know is the equivalient of the chinese word Chi.. and relates to life force energy.. and Rei translates as God or Divine or Spiritual or (holy) ghost.. so most people just wack the two together and there you go.
But, as with most Japanese words it is more like a metaphor or a poem than an equation. Which points to our dualism again. We want it to be nice and neat.
Perhaps think about it like this.. as a relationship between Rei and Ki.. but please dont start thinking about Rei as being God.. in a theistic kind of way. Better yet maybe start to think about it as what happens to Ki when you involve Rei..
(Hang in there with me.. I know we are jumping around a bit here and RT who will be posting soon about internal Chi exercises and runs RMOblog will kick my ass for being so messy with this post, but life is messy)
Most of our students talk about not being able to feel the energy consistently, when they give rei-ki.. they say it is because they cannot focus well that day so the energy is not flowing very well.. the not focussing part is right.. it definitely affects your treatments.. I can already hear lots of people heckling us for that one.. because we are all taught our state of mind does not affect the energy.. just place your hands on the object and let the energy flow.. but do you want to know a little secret.. we say that just so that you dont let worry get into your mind when you first start.
Another cliche that we dont mind here at the Reiki Blog is “all you need to do is get out of the way and let the energy do the healing”.. we like that one.. because that one is true. Very simply.. worry is one way to not get out of the way.. not being able to concentrate while you are giving yourself a treatment is another way of not getting out of the way too! The good news is that the energy still flows, whether you can focus or not.. you just cannot perceive the energy as well or use your intuition to run the treatment.
Anyway.. back to the discussion.. everyone that has done reiki level 2 will attest to the fact that there is always a hidden dialogue between the rei-ki and the object receiving it.. and there needs to be an agreement between the two for that to be of most benefit. If there is no agreement there.. then there is still benefit, but it is more superficial and environmental around the object.
