XAND - NEW XMRV RETROVIRUS LINKED TO CFS

CFS / ME is in the news again!  This week the entire world media have been covering the story of a new retrovirus known as XMRV.  The XMRV retrovirus was discovered in 2006 though Prostate Cancer research but its only recently that the link between CFS / ME and possibly many more diseases has come to light.  CFS researches at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Nevada found that 67% of CFS patients carried this retrovirus and 95% carried its antibodies.  There are only 2 other know human retroviruses, one of which is the HIV.  They work by stopping your immune system from working properly which leaves you open to picking up many other viruses and health problems, this alone may explain why the symptoms found with CFS patients are so varied from person to person.  The terms ME and CFS may also be a thing of the past as this new condition is being referred to as XAND. 

XAND is a simpler retrovirus than HIV and it is believed that current medications already on the market could be used to treat it, as much of the past HIV research will translate over to this new area.  Plans are already afoot to start trialsto see what effects they will have and talk of a vaccine has already surfaced.  Much more information will be coming out over the next few months as a lot more research in this area has already begun so keep an eye out for further news!
